Title: | Siblings with refractory occipital epilepsy showing localized network activity on EEG-fMRI. | Austin Authors: | Carney, Patrick W ;Harvey, A Simon;Berkovic, Samuel F ;Jackson, Graeme D ;Scheffer, Ingrid E | Affiliation: | Epilepsy Research Centre, Austin Health, Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne, Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia | Issue Date: | 7-Jan-2013 | Publication information: | Epilepsia 2013; 54(2): e28-32 | Abstract: | The benign occipital epilepsies of childhood include Panayiotopoulos and Gastaut syndromes; a third syndrome, idiopathic photosensitive occipital epilepsy may also begin in childhood or adolescence. We describe siblings with occipital epilepsy characterized by refractory, frequent, brief visual seizures and normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Electroencephalography (EEG) with functional MRI (fMRI) supports localization of interictal epileptiform activity to the occipital lobes. Our hypothesis is that the siblings share a genetic focal epilepsy arising from a localized occipital network. Although they share many features of Gastaut syndrome, their refractory ongoing seizures in adolescence is unusual and likely due to underlying genetic determinants. | Gov't Doc #: | 23294395 | URI: | https://ahro.austin.org.au/austinjspui/handle/1/11643 | DOI: | 10.1111/epi.12076 | Journal: | Epilepsia | URL: | https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23294395 | Type: | Journal Article | Subjects: | Adolescent Anticonvulsants.therapeutic use Child Data Interpretation, Statistical Electroencephalography Epilepsies, Partial.genetics.pathology.physiopathology Epilepsy, Tonic-Clonic.genetics.pathology.physiopathology Female Humans Intellectual Disability.pathology Lennox Gastaut Syndrome Magnetic Resonance Imaging Male Nerve Net.pathology.physiopathology Neuroimaging Occipital Lobe.pathology.physiopathology Seizures.genetics.pathology.physiopathology Siblings Spasms, Infantile.pathology |
