Abstract: In this chapter, we will provide an overview of the assessment modality referred to as workplace-based assessments. This newer assessment method has evolved over the last two to three decades and focuses on assessing performance in routine clinical practice. It can be easy to be confused by the multitude of workplace-based assessment tools out there and lose sight of the purpose and practice of this method of assessment. Using a case vignette as a practical example, we will explore the process of implementing workplace-based assessment into an educational program in the undergraduate or postgraduate setting. Our aim is to provide a systematic approach to navigating the various considerations and challenges in order to develop, implement, and maintain a quality workplace-based assessment program.
